Overview Of The Bible

Who Shall Inherit The Earth?

Does God Protect Us From Evil?
By Michael A. H. Back

In the Lord's Prayer, Jesus directs us to ask God to "deliver us from evil." Is that accurate? Do we have a scriptural guarantee that God protects His people from evil?

The word translated "evil" is an adjective, NOT a noun. In Greek, when you use the article with an adjective, with no noun present, the adjective modifies an "implied noun." Thus, it should not say "evil," ("evil" would be an abstract noun) it should say, "the evil one" ("evil" is an adjective describing someone or something). So Jesus is actually directing us to ask God to "deliver us from the Evil One."

God never promises to deliver us from all the evils of life, such as suffering, pain, injury, death, etc., but He does definitely promise to deliver us from the clutches of "the evil one."
